Melee Build (Block and Tank)
The default Valheim frontline: timed parry, heavy armor, mace for skeletons and Bonemass, swords and axes otherwise, high-HP food.
At a glance
| Role | Frontline tank. Hold the line, parry, and trade hits. |
| Comes online | Day one. This is the default Valheim playstyle, viable from Meadows. |
| Core skill | The timed parry. Block right as a hit lands to stagger, then punish. |
| Plays well with | A bow or mage in co-op while you soak aggro and control the fight. |
Skills to train
These level by use. Do not grind them, they come with play.
- Blocking: the one to actively practice. It powers the parry and your block strength. The single highest-value combat skill.
- Your weapon line: Swords, Clubs, Axes, Spears, or Atgeirs, whichever you main. Pick one or two and stick with them.
- Run and Jump: cheaper movement means stamina left for blocks and swings.
Food loadout (three slots)
Tanks skew the table toward HP, with enough stamina to keep blocking and dodging. Three buffs at once, always.
| Slot | Pick | Gives |
|---|---|---|
| Health | The highest-HP cooked dish for the tier | The buffer that lets you eat a hit and live |
| Health or balanced | A second HP-leaning dish | Keeps your max HP high while you tank |
| Stamina | One stamina-leaning dish | The pool to block, dodge, and swing without gassing out |
Rule that never changes: three fresh foods and the Rested buff before any fight. Re-eat before they expire.
Gear by tier
Heavy armor at every step. The damage you can block is the build.
| Tier | Armor | Weapon focus |
|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Leather, then a Flint weapon | Flint knife or spear, basic shield, learn to parry |
| Black Forest | Bronze set, round shield | Bronze sword, mace, or axe; Troll hide is a strong light alternative |
| Swamp | Iron set, banded or iron shield | Iron mace for Bonemass and skeletons; iron sword otherwise |
| Mountains | Silver or Wolf set (Wolf gives frost resist) | Silver weapons; tower shield for the big hits |
| Plains | Padded set (needs Linen Thread) | Black Metal sword, axe, or atgeir; top physical tier before magic |
| Mistlands | Carapace set (Black Forge) | Carapace weapons; high block for Seekers |
| Ashlands | Flametal armor, the highest current tier | Flametal weapons against the Charred |
Weapon and shield kit
Match the weapon to the enemy. Damage type matters more than raw numbers.
- Mace or club (Blunt): skeletons take heavy Blunt damage, and Bonemass resists everything except Blunt. Carry one into every Swamp and crypt run.
- Sword (Slash): the versatile default for most foes.
- Axe (Slash): doubles as a tree chopper, handy as a one-bag weapon.
- Spear or atgeir (Pierce): spears throw, atgeirs have a spin secondary for crowds.
- Shield: a round shield blocks and parries; a tower shield trades the parry for raw block against unblockable-sized hits. Block strength scales with the shield and your Blocking skill.
Stations to build
- Workbench, sheltered with a fire, for repairs and the first gear.
- Forge after bronze, for every metal weapon and armor piece. Upgrade it with anvils and a grinding wheel.
- Smelter and Charcoal Kiln, to turn ore and wood into bars and coal.
- Cauldron and Fermenter, for HP food and the poison and frost resist meads each biome needs.
Do this in order
- Meadows: leather armor, a flint weapon, and a shield. Practice parrying Greylings and boars.
- Beat Eikthyr, mine copper, and craft a full Bronze set, sword, and mace.
- Beat The Elder, get the Swamp Key, and farm crypt iron for the Iron set and an iron mace.
- Swamp: bring poison resist mead and the mace. Parry Draugr, then take Bonemass with Blunt damage.
- Mountains: frost resist (mead or Wolf set), Silver gear, beat Moder.
- Plains: survive a Deathsquito, farm Black Metal and Flax for the Padded set, beat Yagluth.
- Mistlands and Ashlands: step up to Carapace then Flametal, keeping high block the whole way.
Watch out for
- Wrong damage type wastes a fight. No mace in the Swamp means Bonemass and skeletons barely flinch.
- Deathsquitos and big slams cannot be safely blocked. Dodge roll those instead of trying to parry.
- Stamina is the real health bar. Running it to zero mid-fight is how tanks die.
- Never skip the Rested buff before a boss. It is the difference between a win and a corpse run.
